5th Annual Calgary Basset Waddle "Hound Olympics"
Today was a basset lovers heaven out there.
22 degrees, mildly sunny.
They stopped taking dog registrations after 100.
Many Thanks should go out to the owners of the property where this event was held.
Obviously Basset Lovers themselves.
The races where a big hit with all.
Even those that chose to lay down at the starting gate.
To the Calgary Basset Rescue I say thank you
for such a fantastic event.
Well done to all !!!

The fenced in yard where most of the action happened.

The races were a giggle a minute.

This was after the signal to GO

The group photo. Shale Photography has the good one of this.

DOG WALKING ETIQUETTE

THE CITY OF CALGARY HAS 635 KM OF PATHWAY USED BY BICYCLES AND PEDESTRIANS OF ALL TYPES INCLUDING PEDESTRIANS WALKING THEIR DOGS.

A FEW OF THE BYLAWS CONCERNING DOGS AND THE PATHWAY SYSTEM.

THESE BYLAWS SHOULD APPLY TO ALL SPACES USED FOR BOTH, IN ANY CITY.

BICYCLES REQUIRE A BELL WHEN ON THE PATHWAYS AND RIDERS ARE REQUIRED TO RING BELL WHEN COMING UP BEHIND SOMEONE.

ALL DOGS MUST BE KEPT ON A LEASH NO LONGER THAN 2 METRES WHILE ON THE PATHWAY, EVEN IN OFF LEASH AREAS. IT IS RECOMMENDED TO PUT YOUR DOG ON THE LEASH WHEN WITHIN 20 METRES OF THE PATHWAY, EVEN IN OFF LEASH AREAS.

( BEING A DAILY CYCLIST, I HAVE SEEN AND BEEN INVOLVED IN FAR TOO MANY ACCIDENTS AND NEAR MISSES BECAUSE OF A DOG OFF LEASH AND RUNNING IN FRONT OF A BIKE ON THE PATH. PLEASE USE SOME SENSE WHILE WALKING YOUR DOG NEAR OR ON A BIKE / PEDESTRIAN PATHWAY. A BICYCLE TRAVELLING AT 20 KM ( PATHWAY SPEED LIMIT ) COULD EASILY KILL EVEN A LARGE DOG PLUS SERIOUSLY INJURE THE RIDER, AS WELL AS POSSIBLY DAMAGE AN EXPENSIVE CYCLE. LONG LEASHES SHOULD ALSO BE KEPT SHORT WHEN ON OR NEAR A PATHWAY. AVOID WALKING ON ONE SIDE OF THE PATHWAY WITH YOUR DOG WANDERING OVER TO THE OTHER SIDE. CAN YOU SAY , CLOSELINE ? )

AND JUST BECAUSE I AM A CYCLIST AND A DOG LOVER, YOU OTHER CYCLISTS OUT THERE USE SOME COMMON SENSE TOO. WHEN APPROACHING PEDESTRIANS AND DOG WALKERS, SLOW DOWN AND GIVE THEM LOTS OF ROOM. EXPECT TO HAVE A DOG RUN IN FRONT OF YOU, IF YOU ARE READY FOR IT BOTH YOU AND THE DOG OWNER WILL BE MUCH HAPPIER. USE A BELL WITH LOTS OF TIME FOR THEM TO REACT. ALL OF US MUST SHARE THE PATHWAYS.

KEEP TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PATHWAY WITH YOUR PET AND KEEP YOUR PET TO THE RIGHT OF YOU.

IF YOUR DOG IS AGGRESSIVE TOWARDS PEOPLE OR OTHER DOGS, KEEP THEM UNDER CONTROL AND ON THE LEASH WHILE IN PUBLIC AREAS.

PLEASE BE A RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNER AND PICK UP AFTER YOUR DOG. A SENSIBLE PERSON WILL CARRY AT LEAST A COUPLE OF BAGS WHENEVER OUT DOG WALKING. THIS PRACTICE SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT EVEN IN LARGE OFF LEASH AREAS IF ONLY TO HELP PREVENT SPREADING DISEASE TO AND FROM OTHER DOGS THAT USE THE AREA.

AND PLEASE, WHEN YOUR DOG MEETS ANOTHER, LET THEM SNIFF EACH OTHER. ITS PART OF THEIR “CULTURE” SINCE THEY HAVEN'T MASTERED THE HANDSHAKE AND VERBAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS LIKE OURSELVES YET.  e.g. I HAVE SEEN DOG OWNERS MEET, SHAKE HANDS AND THEN DISIPLINE THEIR DOGS FOR SNIFFING EACH OTHER.

ITS THE SAME THING TO THEM.

BASSET WADDLE

BEING A PRETTY SERIOUS BASSET LOVER, THIS WAS AN EVENT I COULDN'T PASS UP. THERE ARE A LOT MORE BASSETS

AROUND CALGARY THAN I EVER DREAMED. THIS EVENT WAS HOSTED BY THE BASSET HOUND RESCUE NETWORK CALGARY

OF THE CANADIAN BASSET RESCUE NETWORK. IT WAS WELL ATTENDED WITH CLOSE TO ONE HUNDRED BY THE TIME I

LEFT AND STILL GROWING. BASSETS ARE A HAPPY DOG, WITH ALL THOSE THERE THEY WERE ALL JUST HAPPY TO SEE

OTHERS LIKE THEM. NO FIGHTS OR EVEN GROWLS. I HAD TO LEAVE EARLY BECAUSE I WAS CONCERNED I MIGHT KIDNAP

ONE OF THEM.
